Complete Guide to Renewing Your Residence Status in Japan
Renewing your residence status (visa) lets you keep living in Japan under the same status. If your period of stay expires, you become an illegal overstayer and may be subject to deportation, so apply early.
① When Can You Apply?
You can apply from roughly 3 months before your period of stay expires (if you hold a stay period of 6 months or more). Offices are crowded close to the deadline, so applying 2–3 months ahead is recommended.
② Where to Apply
Apply at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau (or branch/office) that covers your address. Certain statuses can also apply via the Online Residence Application System.
③ Required Documents
Documents vary by status, but the following are common to all:
- Application for extension of period of stay
- Passport photo (4cm × 3cm, taken within 3 months; not required for some work statuses)
- Passport and Residence Card (to present)
Main additional documents by status
| Status | Examples of additional documents |
|---|---|
| Work (e.g. Engineer/Humanities/Int'l Services) | Certificate of employment; resident tax payment/taxation certificates |
| Student | Enrollment certificate, transcript, attendance records |
| Dependent | Copy of the supporter's Residence Card; proof of occupation/income |
④ Fees
You pay the fee when the renewal is approved. From April 1, 2025, the extension fee is ¥6,000 (revenue stamp), or ¥5,500 for online applications (previously ¥4,000).
⑤ Processing Time & Result
Standard processing takes about 2 weeks to 1 month (varies by status and season). A new Residence Card is issued upon approval. If denied, you can request an explanation of the reason.
⑥ Points to Note
- Even one day past expiry is an overstay — always apply before the deadline
- Changing/leaving a job, marriage/divorce, or a change of affiliated organization require a separate notification
- Notify your city office of an address change within 14 days of moving
- Unpaid taxes or pension can affect the review
