Tax Return Guide for Foreigners in Japan: How to Claim Refunds
Foreigners working in Japan must pay income tax and resident tax. However, you may be able to reclaim overpaid taxes through a tax return.
① Who Should File?
- Income over ¥20M/year
- Side income over ¥200,000/year
- Freelancers and self-employed
- Those who resigned mid-year (may get a refund)
② Filing Period & Steps
File annually from Feb 16 to Mar 15 (refund applications from Jan 1).
- Get withholding tax certificate from employer
- Create return form on National Tax Agency website
- Submit to tax office (in person, mail, or e-Tax)
- Receive refund in ~1-2 months
③ Resident Tax (Jumin-zei)
Resident tax is based on the previous year's income and paid June–May. Employees have it deducted from salary.
